OREX® History

Within the framework of the socialist industrial system and the demand for consumer goods, analog and electronic wristwatches emerged, associated with the idea of “made locally.” In the available literature, OREX is mentioned as a name present during the 1980s, a period when the wristwatch functioned not only as an instrument, but also as a social reference.

In the early stages, case components and movements were sourced through imports or external partners. Over time, attempts were made to introduce technological processes and standardization—such as tooling, presses, and structured production flows—with mixed results across different periods.

The models reached a wide audience: military personnel, professionals, students, and collectors. The design was generally sober and highly legible, while the cases were produced in various executions and finishes.

Calibres mentioned in descriptions and collections:

• China: Seagull / Diamond – hand-wound mechanical movements with 17/19 jewels, in various variants; as well as quartz.
• GDR: Ruhla UMF / K09 – robust, utilitarian movements.
• USSR: Slava – well-regarded mechanical movements, comparable in robustness to many Western solutions.

With the opening of the market, international brands entered in large numbers. Without substantial investment and lacking a competitive industrial supply chain, production declined, and OREX gradually became a reference of its era.

Over time, the remaining watches turned into family heirlooms and collectors’ pieces—technical documents of a specific period.

Collector communities photograph, identify, restore, and archive OREX models. Gradually, the brand re-emerges in discussions about Romanian fine mechanics and the culture of technical objects.

The contemporary project proposes a premium reinterpretation, featuring modern cases, newly designed dials, Swiss mechanical movements, and a presentation inspired by the traditions of European watchmaking—while preserving the core DNA of the OREX name.
